A surgeon who is certified by the American Board of Surgery has training, knowledge, and experience related to the diagnosis and comprehensive management of surgical conditions in the areas listed below. This includes preoperative, operative, and postoperative care, as well as the treatment of complications in these areas. General surgeons are trained in minimally invasive (laparoscopic) surgery and endoscopy -- surgical techniques using telescopic instruments to examine or treat internal organs -- which are commonly used in surgical management.
